Over the past few months there have been some MAJOR changes in my life. I have gone from being single, to being married! I have also moved across the Indian Ocean (from South Africa to South East Asia) to work, travel and meet new people while experiencing a whole new culture.
The one thing that has become so clear is the sheer importance of establishing a routine! I have moved quite a few times in my life, and every time you have to start all over, make new friends, and really get into the groove of a new environment. At first I always feel a bit lost and overwhelmed – which is usually when panic sets in. I start to ask myself: Why did I move again? Am I ever going to get used to this? Should I just move back?
As somewhat of an adventurous spirit I have always looked forward to these big changes, and the first few weeks are always the best times of my life! This is usually because there’s a lot of excitement, new events, and new people involved. This can include changing jobs, moving away, or even launching a new business. However, where I have trouble is once the excitement dies down… then what??
Suddenly everyone goes back to their old routines, and you’re the only one left with the persistence of change. And that’s exactly where ROUTINE comes in!
BENEFITS OF A ROUTINE
Here are 4 key points that I value about a routine which ultimately helps you to form healthy habits, both in your personal and in your work life.
1. It Maximizes Your Productivity
When you have a specific schedule and routine established you will spend less time on meaningless tasks and more time focusing on the specific work to be done that day. Your time becomes structured and ultimately enables you to achieve maximum productivity in your day.
2. Structure Keeps You Focused
When your routine is set in place, you know exactly what requires your maximum attention and where to focus your energy. If you are unsure of exactly how your day is structured, your mind wanders to all the other things that still need to be completed. You end up wasting more time worrying about when you’ll get to all the things on your to-do list instead of focusing on the task at hand.
3. Gets You Out Into the World
As you assign specific time slots to various activities and appointments in the day, it ensure that you get out into the world. Here your routine almost forces you to meet new people and engage with other passionate entrepreneurs and build a healthy work-life balance. Without this it is easy to get caught up with work, and before you know it the whole day is gone.
4. Routines Build Discipline
Yes, I know there are many of us out there who would sleep until 10 every morning if we could. However, once your morning is gone the rest of the day flies by just as quickly! If your passion doesn’t already, a well planned routine can energize you to get out of bed every morning and pursue the day head-on. When going to the gym is part of your routine, the discipline you learn can be carried through to your business, improving your decision-making as well as importance financial stewardship.
Ultimately I truly believe that a solid routine can improve the quality of both your personal and your business life. Routines help to establish healthy habits that will follow you wherever you go next.
